Tania LaCaria is a contemporary abstract painter who has exhibited extensively in Canada, especially in the Toronto metropolitan area as well as in the United States and internationally in Italy. She has a background in interior design and selected exhibitions include Farside Gallery, Smokestack Studios, Westdale Theatre, and Cotton Factory in Hamilton, Ontario, Unfold Gallery, HUGXYZ, and Canada Hashtag Gallery in Miami, Part Crowd Gallery and The Artist Project in Toronto, and Palazzo Pisani Rivedin in Venice. Tania’s awards include the Kimberley Seldon Competitive Edge Scholarship, York University Entrance Scholarship, and Hamilton Arts Council Arts Week grant. She has been published by Best Side Magazine, Vanity Fair, British Vogue and Suboart Magazine.
The recent paintings by Tania LaCaria appear more like assemblages or collages rather than straight acrylic on canvas paintings due to their incorporation of fragmented elements, text, and geometry. Ranging from urban depictions to scenery of plants, foliage, fruit, furniture, portraits, interiors, text, scribbles, smoke, and planes of geometry, the paintings are arranged in a unique format of mostly monochromatic tones juxtaposed on top of each other in an organized yet sporadic layout and manner. Ranging from abstracted brushstrokes which resemble fog or sfumato as well as the incorporation of silhouetted figures, interiors, and urban settings, Tania’s works sprawl across the composition to reveal a creative display of organized or controlled chaos. Although her geometric compositions are reminiscent of the structure contained in the works of Piet Mondrian provides an overall soothing harmony.
With a distinctive approach and an eye for composition, Tania’s paintings have the aesthetics of a collage or assemblage through the rapid and busy overlay of many representational elements conducting activity simultaneously. If she can achieve such visuals with just paint, imagine what would happen if Tania were to literally take up assemblage or collage as a medium for experimentation. The variety in her imagery along with the layout construed in a mannerism reflective of her experience in interior design exemplify contemporary design principles and aesthetics.
Celestial Love Painting (pictured above) depicts both an urban and natural scene with the incorporation of fern foliage combined with depictions of a subway train against a night sky. The scribbles and geometrical-laid-out smoke are carefully placed across the composition followed by the silhouette of a figure. A dynamic work of art which offers the audience an approach to offering a variety of subjects as well as compositional structure to express a scene reminiscent of a tropically-inspired city such as Miami.
Tania LaCaria creates imaginative structured formations which reinterpret multiple subject matter and successfully orchestrates them in a manner which conveys a deep understanding of design principles as well as an instinct towards her personal convictions in expression. Through a sophisticated brush which executes planes of perspective similarly to an assemblage or collage as well as a spirited incorporation of geometry, Tania LaCaria expresses urban and natural life through a sophisticated visual orchestra.
