The paintings are smears of colors carefully directed with a palette or spackling knife into forms of snake-like curvature. These motion blur effects and lucid colors have a technological and futuristic aesthetic unrelated to earlier eras of painting. The direct control of the smears divides the colors into sections contained within the forms.
Tectonic and versatile, these earthly plates of color flow carefully throughout the canvas, surrounded by vast portions of negative space. The negative space contains compositional elements as divided planes. Cool and collective, the paintings project the artist’s confidence in guiding tones towards his intended destination. These paintings do not appear improvised, although they may be, but instead like a grand design carefully guiding colors into forms of curvature. Like large portions of electrical wiring, the shapes ‘explode’ with color as they contort towards the other side of the canvas. Jesús exemplifies expression but with nuance and a sense of sophistication through the variety and great control of the spatialized color fields.
Turquoise River (pictured above) remains one of Jesús’ most vibrant pieces. The cool and rich black and blue creates a sense of depth and heightened sense of visual awareness. The smears in the particular pieces are stronger than most of his works as he guides the paint towards motion and blur. With great precision and nuance, Jesús takes command of his surface and exemplifies an aesthetic which can only be identified as contemporary.
Jesús Núñez can be described as a gifted painter who creates complexities in simple, idyllic forms. His nuance of colors and sophisticated application of his palette reveals an artist fully attuned with the nature of the paint and surface. He respects paint as a vehicle for motion yet flatness. The paintings reflect a deeply urban aesthetic towards fleeting moments and the passage of light and time. in the fast-paced digitized world Jesús creates streaking paintings of colors swiftly striding against the surface.
